Starts with distortion dimed. At 1:14 I dial them down to about 6, with various guitar vol/pu settings; at 3:00 I turn the distortion way down, then gradually toe them back up. At 5:40 the amp is turned up louder but not cranked, and the pedals are full on again, for harmonic feedback (audio in this section is just the camera mic). In all cases I had the pedal volumes set for unity gain, give or take. The Upstairs Critics at 8:16.. Playing a 1991 Fender USA Strat Plus with Fender-Lace Sensor pickups (neck/middle: gold; bridge: silver) into an '86-'88 ProCo Rat (the black pedal), then into MI Audio Crunch Box (the red pedal). Both pedals are true bypass so I daisy chained instead of using a/b switch. Then into a Pignose B100V amp head, into a Yamaha S412 4x12 cab loaded with Celestions. For the first 5 minutes 40 seconds the amp is on about 5 (loud enough to play with a drummer--thus some of the unwanted feedback you hear early on, as I was standing two feet from the amp/speakers--single coil pickups are naturally pretty noisy, but neither pedal is noisier than the average distortion pedal; I'll say the Crunch Box is slightly quieter than the Rat in actual use). All tone knobs on the amp are around 5 (approximately flat). Yes this is a bass head, a Dennis Kager designed clone of the famous Ampeg B15 flip top but with four 6L6 power tubes instead of two. It's just a very solid clean tube head that passes the true tone of any guitar or bass right on through with minimal ...

Route your mic into an eq pedal. Output of eq pedal goes into the splitter. Channel A goes from splitter straight into a cranked tube amp. Channel B goes from the splitter into a delay pedal set for a short single slapback echo. From the delay it goes into a crunchy solid state amp. Choose two amps that are about the same wattage (here both are about 4 to 5 watts), but set the volume a little higher on the the non-delayed amp (here, the tube amp). Set the non-delayed amp to have a bit less treble response, and set the delayed amp to have a bit less bass (here this just works becasue the tube amp is naturally bassy, and the pignose is naturally trebly). This all contributes to the 3-D "stereo" effect, which is really much more pronounced in person than as recorded in mono by a crappy computer mic.

This is the mating together of my Vintage Hofner 457/se 2 Archtop with a Pignose G40V all valve amp. Similar Tube configuration to the Tweed Bassman ~ 3x12AX7 and 2x6L6 ~ it even has a 10" speaker! Same 40 loud watts, but tamed by the inclusion of a gain control so you can get breakup at comfortable levels. A further beauty of this highly portable little amp (24Lbs), is that it allows for either an 8 or 4 ohm output so you can drive a 4x12 easily. These are such good amps for the money I fail to understand why so few have picked up on them ~ afterall, Pignose has a rich history and many top bands and users have been thankful both live and in the studio for its famous 7-100 battery amp that is an incredible pre-amp option. However, this does as good as a job as a driven Bassman, but at usuable levels ~ trust me I KNOW! No pedals, or editing - straight into Canon Powershot A75 and Windows Movie Maker.

These mics are made from Yellowbox, the very rare Jarrah from South Western Australia and their favourite timber for Mics, Australian Cypress from Northern Victoria.These are smaller than most bullet mics and area easy to hold and compress the sound by getting a more air tight seal. www.loudbark.net

Morello is famed for his guitar style, which consists of blues, heavy metal, and punk hybrid riffs and funk/hip hop-inspired sounds. His guitar playing is also characterized by heavy use of guitar effects, such as delay, modulation, wah, harmonizers, distortion, feedback, and others in unique ways and combinations. The most recognizable effect in Morello's arsenal is the Digitech Whammy, which helps him create many of his sounds. Critically acclaimed, he is said to use the guitar in a unique and imaginative way; rather than just plucking the strings, his maneuvers include toggling between two pickups - one on and one off - while rubbing his hands on the strings over the pickups; uses the bridge pick up (his signature vinyl scratch effect used in "Bulls on Parade"). He also uses techniques such as rapidly hitting a pencil on the strings ("Cochise", although he now emulates the sound by "baby-tapping" the strings), scraping an allen wrench on the strings for a whole song ("People of the Sun") and even tapping or scratching his pick-ups and strings with his audio jack cable. To assist in his alien guitar sounds, Morello chooses various effects pedals. During his tenure in RATM, he used a Dunlop Cry Baby, a Digitech WH-1 Whammy, a Boss DD-2 Digital Delay, a DOD EQ pedal (used to boost the volume during guitar solos), and an Ibanez DFL Flanger.
